Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — A man convicted of the 2020 murder of a municipal employee was sentenced Thursday to 37 years in prison, authorities said.
Jimmy José “N” received the sentence for the killing of Natty Suárez, who worked for the Isla Mujeres city government. Suárez’s body was found on April 26, 2020, in the La Gloria neighborhood with a stab wound to the neck and signs of violence, according to reports at the time.
The feminist collective Siempre Unidas, which supported the case, said it took six years for the suspect to be sentenced. The group thanked Suárez’s family for their perseverance in seeking justice.
“Justice never arrives fully when a woman is no longer here and leaves such a great absence,” the collective said in a statement. “Today we embrace the memory of Natty, the strength of her family, and the resistance of those who did not let go of her name during these six years.”
The group acknowledged that the defendant may appeal the sentence but added: “Today one thing became clear to everyone: Jimmy José is a femicide perpetrator.”
Suárez, 40, worked in the municipal civil protection department. At the time, then-Mayor Juan Carrillo and civil protection director Mercedes Ortiz expressed condolences.
Evidence collected at the scene indicated that Suárez’s romantic partner may have been responsible. The State Prosecutor’s Office arrested Jimmy José just two days after the body was discovered.
