Mahahual, Quintana Roo — A jaguar attacked and injured two dogs in Mahahual, a coastal town in southern Quintana Roo, prompting a community response that led to veterinary care for the animals.
The incident occurred near a jungle area, where residents reported hearing the dogs howling in pain despite having reinforced enclosures. Members of the Proyecto Akk Mahahual association arrived at the scene to treat the pets.
Proyecto Akk Mahahual emphasized that the jaguar does not typically attack humans and that its presence in populated areas is likely due to habitat loss and a decline in natural prey, forcing it to search for food elsewhere.
Authorities and conservation groups urged residents to report any jaguar sightings and seek assistance to protect both domestic animals and the endangered species.
