Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez hands a scholarship certificate to soccer player César Díaz Murillo during a ceremony at the city hall.

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde has launched a municipal scholarship program for high-performance athletes, awarding the first grant to professional soccer player César Díaz Murillo.

Díaz Murillo, a member of the Toluca Under-21 youth squad, received the scholarship during a ceremony at the City Hall council chamber. The program aims to recognize the effort, discipline, and talent of athletes who represent the municipality in professional competitions.

“César’s story is one of struggle, perseverance, and discipline — a story of many people working to achieve a dream,” Gómez said.

The scholarship provides a monthly financial stipend to help the athlete continue his training and professional growth. The mayor emphasized that a corresponding agreement has been signed to ensure the program’s continuity in future administrations, strengthening public policies in favor of sports and youth development.

Officials attending the ceremony included Municipal Secretary General Hugo Iván Sánchez Montalvo, Trustee José Inés Aguilar Rodríguez, First Councilor Isla del Mar Magaña López, General Director of Social Development Suemi Beatriz González Sánchez, and Sports Director Fernando Bacelis Godoy.
