Cancun, Quintana Roo — Firefighters contained a large fire Sunday at a recycling plant on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue that spread to an adjacent vehicle lot, damaging 68 vehicles, authorities said.

The emergency call came in at 10:11 a.m., prompting a major response from the Cancun Fire Department, which deployed 34 personnel and 12 specialized units including fire engines, water tankers, and support vehicles.

Upon arrival, crews found the fire had started at a recycling company storing highly combustible materials — tires, oils, and various chemicals — which fueled the rapid spread to a neighboring lot used for vehicle storage.

Firefighters conducted attack, containment, and protection maneuvers to prevent the flames from reaching other risk areas. By 1:28 p.m., they had contained 80% of the blaze, and continued with full extinguishment and cooling operations to eliminate any risk of re-ignition.

Approximately 220,000 liters of water were used, supplied by fire department units, support tankers, and collaborating companies.

Civil protection, Red Cross paramedics, the Municipal Public Security Department, Municipal Transit, and military personnel also participated, working together to ensure public safety and maintain perimeter control.

No injuries were reported, officials said.
