Cancun, Quintana Roo — Influencer and content creator Sabrina Lan has publicly accused thieves of stealing luxury items from her checked baggage at Cancun International Airport, saying her suitcase was opened and several high-end items were taken.
In a video shared on social media, Lan said she noticed irregularities in her luggage upon arriving in Cancun. She reported that three pairs of sunglasses were missing, including a pair of Chanel and two pairs of Gucci.
“I had all the glasses packed … a Chanel and two Gucci … and they were gone,” she said.
Lan said she did not immediately realize her bag had been tampered with because it appeared to have been re-closed. However, she found items that did not belong to her inside, including a lipstick and a dirty handkerchief, as well as open makeup scattered throughout the luggage.
She said she traveled with American Airlines from New York to Cancun and claimed the bag was opened both on arrival and on the return trip. On the way back, she said, more personal care products were taken.
“When I returned, they also opened my suitcase and stole more skincare items,” she stated.
After researching online, Lan said she found testimonials from others who reported similar incidents, warning that jewelry, sunglasses, and cosmetics are the most commonly stolen items.
The complaint went viral on TikTok, where the video has accumulated 1.2 million views, 133,700 likes, and 2,699 comments. Many users shared their own similar experiences and advised her to demand compensation from the airline. Others noted that such thefts are often the work of airport employees rather than the airline itself, with some pointing fingers at customs personnel.
Some commenters expressed embarrassment for the country, while others reiterated that valuables should never be placed in checked baggage.
