Gunman Shoots Alleged Loan Shark Outside Elementary School in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A suspected loan shark of Colombian origin was shot multiple times Tuesday morning outside the Maria del Rosario Ortiz elementary school in the Kusamil neighborhood of Cancun.

Police received a report of the attack at 11:15 a.m. on Paseo Kusamil Avenue in Superblock 110. Witnesses said they heard between seven and 10 gunshots.

The victim, believed to be a loan shark operating under the “gota a gota” model — a type of high-interest informal lending often associated with extortion — was rushed to the General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

Because the shooting occurred near the end of the morning school shift, staff evacuated students through the back of the building.

Police have launched a large-scale operation in the area to locate the attackers. Agents and forensic experts from the State Prosecutor’s Office are collecting evidence as part of an ongoing investigation.
