Uber drivers in Cancun have expressed disappointment following a meeting with National Guard authorities. The drivers were seeking an end to the harassment they face from taxi drivers while operating at the Cancun airport. Águeda Esperilla, a representative of the Uber drivers, stated that the National Guard is mirroring the state government's stance by not allowing them to operate normally.
Esperilla argued that the authorities are failing to acknowledge that Uber drivers have a right to provide services at the airport. This comes after Uber recently filed an injunction to allow its drivers to operate in the federally governed airport area.
During the meeting, National Guard authorities stated they have not received any notification of the injunction. As such, they will continue to detain Uber drivers found operating at the airport. Esperilla said, "They told us that since they have not been notified, they can't do anything about it. They don't recognize the injunction, and we can be fined for providing the service."
Esperilla also highlighted that rogue transporters at the airport are targeting vehicles they suspect of operating with Uber. These transporters, acting as if they were authorities, have detained several vehicles and reported them to the National Guard.
The Cancun International Airport administration's measures to prevent tourists from using unauthorized and Uber transport have caused frustration. These measures have even resulted in altercations with security guards as tourists are forced to exit through a single area.
