Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Federal agents raided the Makax fishing cooperative in the Cañotal neighborhood of Isla Mujeres on Saturday, detaining two people in an operation that lasted more than eight hours.

Agents from the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR), supported by municipal police, state police, the National Guard, the Mexican Navy, and the FGR’s Criminal Investigation Agency, executed a search warrant at the cooperative. Authorities closed a section of the western perimeter road during the operation.

Officials have not disclosed what was found inside, but sources suggest firearms were seized. The premises were sealed with FGR tape.

Dozens of fishermen gathered at the scene but were denied entry. They protested the detentions, arguing that the two individuals were elderly people who were only guarding the site. Fishermen denied that any weapons were found.

Federal agents spoke with the families to prevent the situation from escalating. They showed a representative the judicial order authorizing the search.

In 2023, state prosecutor’s office agents raided the same building following the disappearance of a fisherman, finding drugs on that occasion.
