Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Felipe Carrillo Puerto-Playa del Carmen highway has become the most dangerous road in Quintana Roo, with emergency services responding to five to six crashes daily, according to Jorge Ariel Rivero Jiménez, delegate of the National Emergency Commission.
Rivero Jiménez said road accidents across the state have increased about 30% compared to last year, a trend that worries authorities as the vacation and hurricane seasons begin, bringing more drivers and tourists onto the roads.
The delegate attributed most crashes on the FCP-Playa del Carmen stretch to speeding, cellphone use while driving, and a lack of road safety culture. “All roads are dangerous when speed limits are not respected and when we lack traffic education,” he said.
Rivero Jiménez also warned about poor conditions on the Cafetal-Mahahual highway, where potholes and pavement deterioration have caused tire blowouts and loss of vehicle control. Although no serious injuries have been reported there, he noted that many incidents go unreported to emergency authorities.
“Some people don’t know the road and that causes accidents. We arrive to help in some cases of tire blowouts, but fortunately nothing serious has happened,” he said.
The official urged drivers to check their vehicles’ mechanical condition before hitting the road, including tires, lights, and engine, and to respect speed limits and maintain safe distances. He also acknowledged that alcohol consumption plays a role in some crashes, especially in tourist areas with high visitor traffic.
With increased traffic expected during the holidays and tropical cyclone season, authorities anticipate road accidents will continue to rise in the coming weeks.
