Cancun, Quintana Roo — Construction workers discovered apparent human remains inside a septic tank Wednesday afternoon while cleaning and renovating a home in Cancun’s Supermanzana 227 neighborhood, prompting a large police response.
Authorities received a call to the 911 emergency line around 5:30 p.m. reporting what appeared to be a human limb inside a septic tank at a home on Avenida Centenario at Calle 34, according to initial reports.
Municipal police officers arrived and spoke with the workers, who said they spotted what looked like a human hand inside the tank while performing maintenance work.
After a preliminary inspection, officers confirmed the presence of human remains and requested assistance from firefighters for a more thorough examination. Rescue personnel reported that in addition to the visible limb, what appeared to be the rest of the body could be seen at the bottom of the structure.
The area was cordoned off to preserve evidence, and the State Prosecutor’s Office was notified. Investigators began processing the scene and recovering the remains, which will be taken to the forensic medical service to determine the cause of death and the victim’s identity.
Neighbors said the home had been occupied for some time by homeless individuals but was recently purchased by a new owner, who hired workers to rehabilitate the property — leading to the discovery.
The State Prosecutor’s Office will continue the investigation to determine how the remains ended up in the septic tank.
