Dog Rescued From Drainage Canal in Chetumal; Animal Abuse Investigation Underway

A brown dog being rescued from a drainage canal by firefighters in Chetumal, Quintana Roo

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A brown dog was rescued alive after becoming trapped in branches inside a drainage canal in the Dina neighborhood, prompting a response from municipal health officials and firefighters in Othon P. Blanco.

The rescue came after a citizen reported the animal in the canal, an area considered risky due to frequent crocodile sightings.

Municipal Health Director Erick Lopez Cruz said his department acted as first responders and coordinated the rescue with firefighters, bringing the dog to safety with no apparent serious injuries.

During the operation, authorities found signs suggesting the dog may have been tied up before becoming trapped, leading them to investigate possible animal abuse.

“The site poses a significant risk due to the constant presence of crocodiles, which could have endangered the animal’s life,” Lopez Cruz said.

Neighbors identified the dog, affectionately known as Firulais, and said they regularly provide him with food and water.

After the rescue and a health check, authorities released the dog back into the area where the community cares for him.

Authorities urged the public to report any acts of animal cruelty, emphasizing that protecting animals is a shared responsibility.
