Cancun, Quintana Roo — A Colombian woman was shot and killed Wednesday morning in the Paseos del Mar neighborhood of Cancun, in what authorities believe was a targeted attack linked to her work as a loan collector.
The victim, identified by acquaintances as “La China,” was gunned down around 9:30 a.m. on Isla de Pascua Street in the region 251 area. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and called emergency services.
According to preliminary reports, the woman had gone to a home to collect a debt and was followed after leaving. The suspect shot her repeatedly — at least seven times, mostly in the back and head — and she died on the sidewalk next to her motorcycle.
The attacker initially fled on foot and then boarded a Route 234 public bus heading toward downtown Cancun, witnesses said.
Police officers from the Municipal and State Police, along with National Guard personnel and paramedics, responded to the scene. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office processed the area and collected ballistic evidence.
Friends and family arrived during the investigation and confirmed the woman’s identity. She was reportedly a trained professional who had moved to Cancun for personal reasons and later began working as a loan collector under the informal “gota a gota” (loan shark) system. Unconfirmed reports also suggested a possible connection to drug sales, but the Prosecutor’s Office has not verified this.
Authorities are searching for the suspect and investigating the motive.
