Cancún, Quintana Roo — A judge has sentenced a man to 37 years and seven months in prison for the rape of a teenage girl in Cancún, the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Daniel Ramón Jeremy Ávalos Esquivel was convicted after prosecutors presented evidence linking him to the assault, which took place on Dec. 22, 2018, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Investigators said the victim met Ávalos Esquivel at an event inside a shopping plaza in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where she identified him as the establishment’s manager. He later invited the girl and a friend to his home, where two other people were present. It was there that the sexual assault occurred.
After reviewing the evidence, the trial judge determined Ávalos Esquivel’s criminal responsibility and handed down the conviction. In addition to the prison term, the judge imposed a fine of 181,350 pesos and ordered him to pay restitution for material damages, the prosecutor’s office said.
