5-Year-Old Boy Dies in Rollover Crash on Tizimín-Río Lagartos Highway

Tizimín, Yucatán — A 5-year-old boy was killed and five other people were injured Monday when the car they were traveling in rolled over on the Tizimín–Río Lagartos highway, authorities said.

The crash occurred at kilometer 69+900 on the road linking Valladolid with Río Lagartos, in the stretch from Tizimín toward the coast.

The vehicle, a red Chevrolet with license plates UUB959R, was driven by a 21-year-old man who told officials he was heading from Río Lagartos to Tizimín when he suddenly lost control for reasons that have not been determined.

The car veered to the right, left the roadway and rolled several times on adjacent ground before coming to rest upside down, perpendicular to the highway, according to the report.

Six people were inside the car. The boy suffered severe head trauma. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency services and paramedics’ attempts to revive him, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver and two other passengers were evaluated at the scene and found to have only bruises; they received first aid and did not require hospital care. Two women in the vehicle were taken to a hospital in Tizimín with various injuries, acute distress and apparent signs of alcohol consumption.

Officers from the Public Security Department, the National Guard’s highway division, the State Investigation Police and the Forensic Medical Service responded. Investigators cordoned off the area and preserved evidence while forensic personnel removed the boy’s body for an autopsy. The wrecked car was towed to an official impound lot as part of the administrative process.
