Cancún, Quintana Roo — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa officially inaugurated the Nichupté Vehicular Bridge on Saturday, a 11.2-kilometer (7-mile) structure designed to relieve decades of severe traffic congestion between Cancun’s urban area and its hotel zone.
The bridge provides a second access and evacuation route for Mexico’s top tourist destination, reducing commutes that during peak hours could take up to two hours to a matter of minutes.
A solution for mobility and civil protection
The project, overseen by the federal Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), addresses not only daily mobility for thousands of service-sector workers but also serves a critical civil protection function. The hotel zone is vulnerable to hurricanes, and the bridge offers a rapid evacuation route during such emergencies.
Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, head of SICT, said the structure ranks among the longest in Latin America and will be toll-free for all users.
Engineering and environmental considerations
A key aspect of construction was minimizing impact on the lagoon ecosystem. According to the technical report:
- Top Down technique: Used for the first time in Mexico, this method allowed construction from above, reducing heavy machinery contact with the seabed and mangroves.
- Water management: The design includes reconnecting the lagoon system and installing aerators to improve water quality in the Nichupté Lagoon.
- Interchange: A new distributor at Kukulcán Boulevard complements the bridge, along with security technology such as surveillance arches.
Governor Lezama said the bridge represents a structural change for the city, giving back travel time to local residents. President Sheinbaum reaffirmed that the project is part of a broader infrastructure strategy for southeastern Mexico, including connectivity with the Tren Maya and modernization of federal highways.
The inauguration ceremony included federal cabinet officials, representatives of the construction company ICA, and local residents who participated in a community festival and a sports race to mark the opening. Authorities expect immediate improvements in urban logistics and the region’s tourism competitiveness.
