Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún marked its 56th anniversary with the debut of the Municipal Chamber Orchestra, a new ensemble that officials say will expand access to classical music and strengthen the city’s cultural identity.
The concert took place at the Teatro de la Ciudad, drawing an audience of more than 600 people. Mayor Ana Paty Peralta attended the event, calling the orchestra “a dream come true” for Cancún and a step toward making arts accessible to all residents.
Reyna Arceo Rosado, head of the state’s Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Secretariat, attended on behalf of Governor Mara Lezama. She praised the initiative and noted that art has the power to unite people and inspire younger generations.
Carlos López Jiménez, director of the Institute of Culture and the Arts, announced that the orchestra will offer free concerts to ensure democratic access to music.
With the addition of the chamber orchestra, Cancún now has four municipal arts companies: the Municipal Theater Company, the Choir, the Folk Ballet Company, and the Chamber Orchestra — a distinction that makes it the only municipality in the country with such a lineup, according to officials.
The orchestra performed under the direction of maestro Dante Montes, featuring works including Vivaldi’s “Summer” violin concerto and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances.
The string section included violinists Vanessa López, Josías Sánchez, Eduardo Vázquez, Mayte Caamal, Víctor Corona, and Ekaterina Nikitina; violists Ixchel Vasco, Daniel Tun Noh, and Jeshua Tuero; and cellists Eric Perera and Yaniel Santos. Guest musicians Ariel Ortiz, Julio García, Mayla Carmenate, and Elvira Sullivan also performed.
