Bus Driver Hailed as Hero After Gunfire Erupts on Cancun-Tizimin Route

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A bus driver on the Cancun-Tizimin route is being hailed as a hero after passengers said he safely navigated them out of a shootout on a highway in Quintana Roo.

The driver, identified as Maximiliano, was operating a Noreste bus when it came near an area where occupants of two pickup trucks were exchanging gunfire near El Cedral, according to passenger accounts. A bullet reportedly struck the bus’s windshield, but Maximiliano continued driving until he reached a security checkpoint of the Public Security Department (SSP) near Popolnah, in Yucatan state.

Passengers and social media users have shared videos, photos, and testimonials praising the driver’s composure. Some passengers said they took cover inside the bus while Maximiliano accelerated to leave the danger zone.

Unconfirmed reports on social media suggested the driver suffered minor injuries from glass fragments after the windshield impact. Security officers who responded said the incident occurred in Quintana Roo, outside Yucatan’s jurisdiction. As of now, no official report on the shooting has been released.
