Cancún, Quintana Roo — After the successful debut of its first Municipal Chamber Orchestra, the Benito Juárez city council is laying the groundwork for a larger cultural project: a full municipal symphony orchestra that would represent Cancún and boost its artistic profile nationally.
Carlos López Jiménez, director of the Institute of Culture and the Arts, said the chamber orchestra is not an isolated initiative but the beginning of a comprehensive strategy for musical development in the municipality. The plan includes gradual growth, professionalization of musicians, and expansion of repertoire.
As part of its formal launch, the ensemble will offer two free concerts per month, aiming to establish a regular schedule that gives residents consistent access to orchestral music and helps cultivate new audiences.
López Jiménez emphasized that decentralizing culture is a central goal. The orchestra plans to perform in different areas of Cancún, bringing music to neighborhoods and community spaces that rarely host such ensembles.
“The goal is that music doesn’t stay only in traditional venues, but reaches more people across the city,” he said.
The long-term vision, López Jiménez added, is for the chamber orchestra to evolve in size, integration, and technical level until it becomes a symphony orchestra, which would require more musicians, a stronger structure, and a broader, more complex repertoire.
With this new initiative, Cancún adds a key piece to its cultural infrastructure, strengthening its network of municipal arts companies — which already include theater, choir, and folk ballet — in an unprecedented expansion of the city’s cultural life.
The Institute of Culture and the Arts said the aim is not only to consolidate a wider artistic offering but also to position Cancún as a cultural benchmark in Mexico through long-term musical projects with a strong educational focus.
