Tulum, Quintana Roo — A car overturned Monday afternoon on the Tulum-Cobá highway after its driver lost control. Witnesses said four people were in the vehicle, but they left the scene before emergency crews arrived.
The gray Nissan Tiida, bearing Quintana Roo plates UVW-356-P, was found overturned at kilometer 9.5. Initial reports to emergency services warned of possible injuries, prompting civil protection personnel and traffic officers to respond.
When responders reached the site, they found no one in or around the vehicle. Witnesses said four people had been traveling in the car and managed to climb out after the crash, then left the area. Some accounts suggested the occupants may have been under the influence of alcohol, but that could not be confirmed because none of them remained to be interviewed or medically evaluated.
Responders observed tools and work materials inside and around the car, suggesting the occupants may have worked in construction or a similar trade. Oil and what appeared to be paint covered part of the roadway. Civil protection crews spread dirt over the spilled oil and cleaned the affected area, while traffic officers documented the scene and inspected the damaged vehicle.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities had not reported locating the occupants, and it was unclear why they left before receiving medical attention or speaking with officials.
