Authorities Seize Two Armored Vehicles With Weapons and Drugs in Bacalar

Two armored vehicles seized by authorities in Bacalar, Quintana Roo

Bacalar, Quintana Roo — Federal forces seized two armored luxury vehicles carrying a significant shipment of drugs and firearms during an intelligence operation in the early hours of Monday in the municipality of Bacalar, authorities said.

The operation took place in the rural community of Huatusco, about 71 kilometers from the municipal seat of Bacalar. Security forces located and secured a black Suburban and a white Ram pickup, both equipped with armor. Despite the large deployment and the dangerous cargo, no arrests were made at the scene, according to preliminary reports.

The vehicles and illicit material were transported under heavy security to the state capital, Chetumal, and handed over to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Drug Dealing (FECDN) for investigation.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m., a large convoy of civilian and military vehicles escorted the confiscated vehicles to the FECDN offices on Avenida de Los Insurgentes, between Nápoles and Tecnológico de Tuxtla Gutiérrez streets. Upon confirmation that weapons were inside, the perimeter of the building was completely closed and secured by security forces from all three levels of government, startling nearby residents.

A strict and permanent guard is being maintained by agents from the Mexican Army (SEDENA), the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the National Guard, and the Federal Police. Also participating in the perimeter security are agents from the Ministerial Investigation Police, the State Preventive Police, the Municipal Preventive Police, and personnel from the Traffic Department, who have completely restricted access to the surrounding areas.

Officials are expected to release an official report in the coming hours detailing the results of the operation, which is seen as a significant blow to organized crime in the southern part of the state.
