Audio Leak Allegedly Links Playa del Carmen Police Commander to Caborca Cartel

Audio recording allegedly links Playa del Carmen police commander to Caborca Cartel

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — An audio recording released by the news portal Sin Fronteras Agencias has sparked a new controversy over public security in Quintana Roo, allegedly capturing a conversation between the regional commander of the Investigative Police (PDI) in Playa del Carmen, José Luis Flores Rueda de León, and a suspected member of the Caborca Cartel known as “El Búfalo.”

The recording, whose authenticity has not been officially confirmed, contains exchanges that, if verified, could reveal communication and negotiation between a police commander and a criminal organization operating in the region.

According to the leaked material, the conversation begins in a seemingly cordial tone. In one fragment attributed to the commander, he is heard saying: “They can hang as many narco-banners as they want, buddy, they’ll never fire me.” The discussion then shifts to the operation of alleged drug sales points and criminal activities within the municipality.

One of the most striking aspects is that the suspected cartel member reportedly asks whether they can continue operating certain points and offers money in exchange for favors, while the police commander allegedly responds that it’s “not about money.”

The conversation also references narco-banners recently placed in Playa del Carmen, which have kept authorities under pressure in recent weeks due to accusations made by various criminal groups against officials and security forces.

Another sensitive fragment allegedly includes the commander saying: “With one call, saying he’s from the house, the problem is solved and no one will touch him,” implying that any detained cartel member could be released with a single phone call.

The material also references alleged prior agreements related to armed attacks and violent events in the region. In one passage, the police commander supposedly complains to cartel members about violent actions that generated media and operational pressure on security forces.

The leak comes at a particularly tense time for Playa del Carmen, which has seen armed attacks on bars, attempted executions, narco-banners, and renewed violence linked to a dispute between criminal groups. These events have heightened insecurity among residents and business owners in a city heavily dependent on tourism.

Beyond the specific content, the case again raises questions about the integrity of institutions tasked with combating organized crime. The possibility that a police commander maintains communication with cartel members is a matter of high public interest requiring a thorough and transparent investigation.

As of now, no authority has officially announced an investigation into the recording or issued an institutional position regarding the content attributed to Commander Flores Rueda de León. If the audio is confirmed, it would expose one of the most serious scenarios for any security system: alleged communication between commanders responsible for fighting crime and individuals identified as members of criminal organizations operating in the region.
