Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The sight of homeless people begging for money at intersections and public spaces has raised alarms among social organizations, who suspect some may be exploited by third parties for profit.
Human rights advocates warned that individuals living in abandonment, extreme poverty, or without support networks are especially vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation, with their need turned into a tool for generating income.
The concern stems from possible cases where homeless people are induced or controlled to spend long hours on the streets asking for help — a practice specialists identify as a form of exploitation when a third party benefits.
Organizations that work with vulnerable groups noted that this phenomenon often goes unnoticed by the public because victims face conditions that make it difficult to report or seek help.
They also warned that behind some stories of apparent abandonment may lie much more complex situations involving control, coercion, or the exploitation of people who lack the resources to defend themselves.
In response, they called on the public to remain vigilant and report any situation that could endanger vulnerable individuals, especially when there are signs that someone else is benefiting from their condition.
The alleged exploitation of homeless people is considered a high-impact social problem because it affects one of the most unprotected sectors of the population and can remain hidden for long periods without detection.
