Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A legal advisor for the Executive Commission for Victim Assistance of Quintana Roo (CEAVEQROO) was arrested Monday on charges of severely beating his ex-partner, sparking outrage over the alleged conflict of interest and the actions of another official in the case.
Victor Amed Carrillo Pina, who served as a legal advisor for the commission, was taken into custody by investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) as he left a court hearing in Chetumal. The arrest was carried out under a warrant issued by a judge after the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office of the Women’s Justice Center (CJM) opened an investigation into Carrillo Piña for alleged severe physical violence against his former partner, identified only by her initials Y.S.M.M.
Following the arrest, Carrillo Piña was brought before a court for a formal hearing on charges of gender-based violence. However, the proceedings drew sharp criticism after the legal advisor assigned to the victim, Gretta Guarneros, reportedly sided with the alleged aggressor, violating professional ethics and impartiality.
Observers said Guarneros’s stance amounted to revictimization of the complainant in a setting meant to protect her. Advocacy groups and the public are demanding that senior CEAVEQROO officials and the judicial coordination office take disciplinary and criminal action against those involved.
