Cancun, Quintana Roo — A newborn boy abandoned next to trash bins early Monday is in stable condition and expected to be discharged in a few days, after which he will be placed for adoption, authorities said.
Carlos Álvarez Escalera, the child protection prosecutor for Benito Juárez, confirmed the baby — a 2.5-kilogram (5.5-pound) boy — was found at 1:40 a.m., just hours after birth. He was admitted to the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital at 3:15 a.m. and received a blood transfusion but is now stable.
The State Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation and is reviewing surveillance footage to try to locate the mother, Álvarez said.
Once discharged, the child will be transferred to a temporary care home run by the DIF (family welfare agency) while the legal process to declare him abandoned moves forward. He will then be offered for adoption.
