Merida, Yucatan — Governor Joaquin Diaz Mena has proposed a joint federal-state initiative called the Renacimiento Plan for Merida, a comprehensive strategy to address the rapid growth of the state capital’s metropolitan area through investments in drinking water, mobility and public safety.
During the inauguration of the Kanasin academic unit of the National University Rosario Castellanos (UNRC), Diaz Mena said his administration is willing to request a 1.5 billion peso loan to combine with federal funds to strengthen urban infrastructure and improve quality of life for Yucatan families.
After hearing the governor’s proposal, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for the strategy. “We are going to help the governor provide water to the city of Merida,” she said.
Diaz Mena explained that current capacity in drinking water, mobility and urban equipment is becoming insufficient due to metropolitan growth, affecting thousands of families in Merida and surrounding municipalities.
“I thank you in advance for your support because I am sure you have sensitivity to these problems of the Merida metropolitan area, and we know we can count on you because, thanks to the residents of Merida and the conurbated area, today we have the opportunity to serve them from the governorship and the Presidency of Mexico,” Diaz Mena said.
The plan focuses on three strategic axes: strengthening the drinking water system, improving urban mobility and expanding public safety equipment.
On water infrastructure, the governor detailed plans to create new catchment zones, modernize pumping equipment, repair and expand the drinking water distribution network — which is more than 50 years old — and build new wastewater treatment plants.
