Sheinbaum Warns Corrupt Officials Cannot Hide Behind 4T Movement Amid US Tensions

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum speaking at an event in Kanasin, Yucatan

Kanasín, Yucatán — President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a three-pronged message Saturday, addressing US pressure over drug trafficking charges, the political opposition, and members of her own Morena party implicated in corruption.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Rosario Castellanos National University in Kanasin, Sheinbaum declared that “no foreign government will snatch the transformation from the people of Mexico,” a clear reference to tensions with the United States over narcotics-related indictments against 10 Mexican political figures.

She then appeared to target the opposition, stating: “The corrupt of the past will not steal the transformation from the people of Mexico.”

In remarks that seemed directed at Morena members who claim political persecution, Sheinbaum added: “No one who is not honest, who is not honorable, can hide under the halo of the transformation of the people of Mexico. This is an honest, honorable movement that delivers for the people. As we say: we do not lie, we do not steal, and we will never betray the people of Mexico.”

The president made the comments shortly after touting infrastructure projects such as the Tren Maya and warning that “the rights the people have won can be lost if we are not aware of what we have.”

Earlier, when approached by reporters, Sheinbaum declined to comment on the extradition to the United States of two of the 10 indicted individuals: former Sinaloa Security Secretary Gerardo Mérida Sánchez and former Sinaloa Finance Secretary Enrique Díaz Vega. Both are expected to become protected witnesses.

On Friday, the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, his children, Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázares, and nine others implicated in a New York court for alleged drug trafficking ties. The measure, transmitted to banks via the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV), includes asset freezes and suspension of financial operations while US authorities pursue arrest warrants for extradition.

Sheinbaum said she was unaware of the matter during her morning press conference, and no official government position has been issued.
