Mérida, Yucatán — With the goal of bringing knowledge of nature to the public and rescuing the traditional wisdom of Mayan herbalism, the association Hunab Proyecto de Vida has launched the Hunab Workshops cycle, a series of practical encounters that will take place every Tuesday in November at the facilities of the civil organization's ecological park.

According to Jesús Interian, head of the Educational Services area, this initiative emerged as a way to expand the park's activities, which have been dedicated to environmental education for years, to a more diverse audience.

“We wanted to offer something for adults who are interested in learning about nature and its benefits. Through these workshops, they can gradually get closer to the knowledge of medicinal plants and discover tools that are useful in their daily lives,” he explained in an interview.

First Workshop and November Schedule

The environmental group's first workshop, dedicated to the creation of natural repellents, was held last week and was well-received. Participants learned how to utilize plants like clove and basil through simple techniques to extract their active principles and turn them into ecological alternatives for health care.

Throughout November, four distinct workshops will be offered:

  • November 4: Natural soaps for pets
  • November 11: Workshop on macerated oils
  • November 18: Cultivation and transplanting of medicinal plants
  • November 25: Repetition of the natural repellents workshop for those who could not attend the first one

Promotion of Mayan Herbalism and Environmental Knowledge

Jesús Interian emphasized that these workshops seek not only to transmit practical knowledge but also to promote the revaluation of Mayan herbalism as part of Yucatán's cultural heritage.

“We are in a region with enormous cultural wealth. Much of this knowledge is being lost, and with these workshops we want to recover it and share it with families, neighbors, and the community,” he stated.

“Sometimes we have medicinal plants at home without knowing it. The idea is to learn to recognize them and take advantage of what nature provides us for the benefit of our health.”

“We want people to look at nature again, not just as a landscape, but as a source of knowledge and well-being,” he concluded.
