Taxi Driver Arrested for Stealing Jewelry From Jonathan Succar Peri’s Body

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A taxi driver has been arrested for stealing jewelry from the body of Jonathan Succar Peri, the son of businessman Jean Succar Kuri, after a fatal crash in Cancún’s hotel zone, state prosecutors announced Monday.

State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar said Jessy Vaer “N,” a member of the Andrés Quintana Roo taxi union, took valuables from the bodies of Succar Peri and his companion, who both died after their speeding SUV crashed into a palm tree on Boulevard Colosio near Kilometer 19 and overturned.

The suspect stopped his taxi, climbed onto the wrecked vehicle and removed the jewelry, authorities said. When he was taken into custody, he was still carrying two Rolex watches, two gold chains, two pendants, a bracelet and a ring.

Three minors rescued in Playa del Carmen

In a separate case, López Salazar said authorities arrested a woman identified as Hortensia, alias “La Güera,” for allegedly recruiting three minors from Tenejapa to work as street vendors in Playa del Carmen.

The minors — two 16-year-olds and a 17-year-old — were brought to a house in the “In House” irregular settlement, where they were forced to sell corn and marquesitas (rolled crepes) in 12-hour shifts and perform cleaning chores, according to the prosecutor.

During searches of that house and another property, authorities freed the three minors and arrested Angélica “N,” an 18-year-old known as “La Patrona,” who allegedly earned between 8,000 and 10,000 pesos a day while the minors were paid less than the minimum wage. Investigators seized bags of marijuana, four tricycles used for selling corn, three carts for marquesitas, four steamers, documents and cellphones.

Prosecutors believe Hortensia was responsible for bringing the minors to Playa del Carmen to be exploited.

Homicide arrests in Tulum

López Salazar also reported two arrests linked to homicides in Tulum. Police detained Miguel “Mayki,” a Canadian citizen; Christopher Manuel “Cris,” from Mexico City; and a 17-year-old known as “Fantasma” in the city center. The Canadian and the teenager are believed to have killed Manuel Luciano, a taxi driver who was shot three times days earlier.

In a separate case, authorities arrested Adolfo Ángel “Benya,” an alleged member of a criminal group, in connection with the killing of Gerardo Esteban “El Gato” on August 5. Ángel is accused of killing Esteban for allegedly betraying the group. All suspects remain in pretrial detention pending a court ruling on their legal status.
