Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Investigators with the State Prosecutor’s Office have arrested a 50-year-old woman accused of trafficking three teenagers for labor exploitation, authorities announced.
The suspect, identified as Hortensia “N,” also known as “La Güera,” was taken into custody under an arrest warrant. She is originally from Veracruz, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutors allege the victims were recruited by Hortensia “N” and another woman, Angélica “N,” nicknamed “La Patrona,” after being promised a job preparing and selling food on the street.
The three teenagers traveled from the municipality of Tenejapa, Chiapas, to Playa del Carmen, where they were taken to a home in the informal settlement known as In House. There, they were allegedly forced to work up to 12 hours a day for minimal pay.
Angélica “N” was arrested on Aug. 14. Investigators later found and arrested Hortensia “N” pursuant to a court order.
Both women have been formally charged in connection with the case and remain in judicial custody.
