Woman and Child Injured in Rollover Crash on Cancun-Playa del Carmen Highway

Rescue workers extricate a woman from an overturned vehicle on the Cancun-Playa del Carmen highway

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A woman and a 4-year-old child were injured Thursday after their vehicle overturned on the toll highway connecting Cancun and Playa del Carmen, prompting a rescue operation by emergency services.

The accident occurred near kilometer 20 of the highway, according to the Playa del Carmen Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Fire Department. Responders found the vehicle overturned off the roadway with a woman trapped inside due to severe damage.

Rescue crews used specialized equipment to safely extricate the 36-year-old woman, who received pre-hospital care at the scene before being transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

Two other occupants — a 4-year-old boy and a 36-year-old man — were also in the vehicle. Paramedics treated both, determining the child needed hospital transport to rule out internal injuries. The man sustained minor abrasions and bruises that were not life-threatening, according to initial medical reports.

Authorities released images showing the vehicle completely overturned in brush alongside the highway, highlighting the coordinated response involving firefighters, paramedics and civil protection personnel.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Officials have not yet determined whether excessive speed, mechanical failure or other factors played a role.

Authorities urged motorists to drive cautiously, obey speed limits and check their vehicles’ mechanical condition before traveling on Quintana Roo’s highways.
