Cancún, Quintana Roo — A white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was struck by a motorcyclist while attempting to cross Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard near a well-known shopping center in Cancún, sparking deep indignation and shock among residents.
In a video circulating on social media, the deer, apparently a female, is seen trying to cross the busy roadway. Visibly injured, presumably from an initial collision, the animal managed to cross the median only to be hit by a motorcyclist.
The collision knocked the rider to the ground, where he remained lying on the asphalt, while the deer got up and retreated into a vegetated area that is now part of a real estate development. No authorities have yet issued any statement regarding the incident.
Where Did the Deer Come From?
Just a few kilometers from where the incident occurred lies the Nichupté Mangrove Flora and Fauna Protection Area, a natural reserve that could be the origin of the deer. This area is home to various species of reptiles, birds, and mammals.
It is worth noting that urban expansion has led to increased interactions between wildlife and humans. In recent months, at least three cases of disoriented deer in urban areas have been reported in Playa del Carmen.
