Merida, Yucatan — Uber has announced that Merida will be one of the pilot cities for a new safety feature in Uber Teens that gives parents and guardians live video access to the vehicle interior during rides taken by teenagers.
The tool, integrated into the Family Profile, is designed to give families more peace of mind by allowing guardians to monitor the trip in real time. Video is captured from the driver’s phone and can only be viewed by the parent or guardian linked to the teen’s account. Once the trip ends, access is blocked and the file remains protected.
“With this pilot, we aim to support parents concerned about supervising their teenage children, using solutions designed around the reality of mobility in our cities,” said Cecilia Roman, Uber’s Safety Communications Manager in Mexico.
Uber Teens launched in Mexico in June 2024 and allows riders aged 13 to 17 to request trips under parental supervision. Existing safety features include:
- Highly rated drivers with verified documents and background checks
- Real-time location and trip tracking
- Anonymized chat with the driver
- PIN verification before each trip
- RideCheck, a GPS-based technology that detects route anomalies
The new live video option will depend on the technical capabilities of each driver’s device. Parents will receive a notification when the feature is active on a trip, along with vehicle and driver information.
The pilot positions Merida as a reference point for youth mobility safety technology in Mexico.
