Tulum Honors Athletes for Historic 21-Medal Haul

Tulum athletes at recognition ceremony with Mayor Diego Castanon Trejo

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo hosted a recognition breakfast for local athletes who won a total of 21 medals in state, national, and international competitions in 2026, marking a historic achievement for the municipality.

The event brought together children, adolescents, and young athletes who excelled in various sports. Castañón praised their effort, perseverance, and discipline, calling them role models for the community.

“Today is a celebration in Tulum because you have put our municipality’s name on the map. You are our example to follow, not only as athletes but as people,” Castañón said. “You show us the value of perseverance and discipline in all areas of life. You will always have our support because we want you to keep succeeding.”

Moisés Muñoz, director general of Youth and Sports, noted that the results stem from a joint effort by athletes, families, coaches, teachers, and the municipal government. He highlighted that some athletes who won gold last year repeated their success in 2026.

The 21 medals include 10 gold, 6 silver, and 5 bronze, earned in disciplines such as judo, boxing, chess, and associated wrestling, reflecting the growth and strengthening of sports in the municipality.
