Tulum Dog Owner Demands Justice and Surveillance Cameras After Pet Poisoning

Tulum, Quintana Roo — The owner of a dog that died from suspected poisoning during a walk at a local sports complex led a peaceful protest Thursday, demanding authorities install surveillance cameras and create a safer environment for pets and families.

Manuel Garcia said his one-year-old dog, Wakash, fell severely ill and died minutes after a walk at the Unidad Deportiva sports complex. He filed a complaint with the State Prosecutor’s Office, which opened an investigation into the dog’s death.

“All I want is to share that we are going through a difficult situation in Tulum, because I believe this is the only place where we can walk our dogs,” Garcia said. “We need surveillance cameras because we are all very exposed, not only dogs but also women and children, and it’s also very dark.”

During the demonstration, Garcia emphasized that the protest was peaceful and aimed to raise awareness about the concerns of residents who regularly visit the sports complex with their pets. His primary request is the installation of security cameras, along with a thorough investigation into what happened to Wakash.

Garcia acknowledged that there is no suspect yet and asked that the investigation proceed according to the law.

He also proposed creating a pet-exclusive area within the sports complex to provide a safer space for animals and their owners, reducing risks.

“The goal is not to create conflict but to promote preventive measures that benefit families and their companion animals,” Garcia said.

He noted that Wakash was one year and three months old and vowed to follow the legal process to ensure the case is not forgotten and to help improve security in the area.
