Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — A mother and her daughter were hospitalized after a car rear-ended the motorcycle they were riding on Federal Highway 307, and the driver kept going without offering help, authorities and witnesses said.
The crash happened at kilometer 25 of the highway, on the stretch between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum. Both women were injured and needed treatment from emergency crews.
According to accounts gathered from witnesses, the two were riding along the federal highway when a car traveling ahead of them braked suddenly, forcing the motorcyclist to slow down to avoid a collision. A second vehicle coming up behind could not stop in time and struck the motorcycle, injuring both riders.
Rather than stopping to check on the victims, the driver suspected of causing the crash drove on and left the scene, witnesses said. The make and model of the vehicle and the driver’s identity remain unknown, and officials have not reported any progress in locating the car.
Emergency services were called after the impact. Paramedics from Tulum General Hospital and the Red Cross arrived and gave first aid to the mother and daughter. During the initial assessment, medics determined both needed hospital treatment and stabilized them for transport.
The two women were taken in a yellow-code triage status to Playa del Carmen General Hospital, where they remained under medical care. The classification means they required hospital attention, but the severity of their injuries and their current condition have not been disclosed.
The crash again highlights the hazards motorcyclists face on Federal Highway 307, particularly when vehicles make sudden maneuvers or fail to leave enough distance between each other.
Officials have not confirmed whether they have any information that could identify the driver who allegedly fled. Investigators will need to establish the sequence of events and possible responsibilities in the case while the mother and daughter continue to receive treatment.
