Tulum, Quintana Roo — Santander customers in Tulum will have to travel to Playa del Carmen to carry out in-person transactions after the bank announced the closure of its local branch, without specifying a date or explaining the decision.
The notice appeared on a banner hung at the branch itself, stating that services will be redirected to office 0825 Playacar Riviera Maya. The bank has not detailed how the transition will work or which transactions will still be available in Tulum.
The move is likely to mean extra costs and longer travel times for customers who need to resolve queries, submit documents or complete procedures that cannot be handled digitally. Some clients may also have to request time off work to make the trip to another municipality.
Among those facing the greatest difficulty are older adults, people with disabilities, residents of outlying communities, merchants and small businesses that rely on in-person transactions for their day-to-day operations.
It also remains unclear whether the branch’s ATMs will stay in service or what alternatives account holders will have once the office closes.
Customers said they want Santander to clearly state the final closing date, which services will remain available and what options exist to avoid repeated trips to Playa del Carmen.
