Torrential Rain Brings Relief and Flooding to Felipe Carrillo Puerto

A flooded street in Felipe Carrillo Puerto with water nearly reaching the sidewalk level

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — A torrential downpour Wednesday evening brought relief from the heat but also caused widespread street flooding across the city center, disrupting traffic and commerce.

The heavy rainfall paralyzed activities in the downtown area and inundated main avenues and streets of this municipal seat, according to local reports.

One of the hardest-hit areas, street vendors said, was the road in front of the Expo Maya facilities, where water nearly reached the top of the sidewalk. Many drivers hesitated before crossing the flooded zone.

People at the scene noted that a lack of maintenance on one of the absorption wells prevented water from draining quickly, causing the water level to rise and driving away customers.

Another affected area was near the Benito Juárez municipal market, where a large sheet of water covered the street, allowing only vehicles and motorcycles to pass through.
