A taxi driver suspended after attacking an elderly mototaxi driver with a baseball bat in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities have suspended a taxi driver who was caught on video attacking an elderly mototaxi driver with a baseball bat in the Villas del Sol neighborhood.

The Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) and the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi union announced the indefinite suspension of the driver and the revocation of his public service license pending an investigation.

The attack occurred late Saturday night on Azulejos Street in Villas del Sol. According to unofficial reports, the taxi driver, operating vehicle number 1424, was allegedly intoxicated when he got out of his cab and struck the mototaxi driver with a baseball bat.

The victim said the taxi driver had cut him off, leading to an argument that escalated into the assault. A neighbor recorded the incident and posted the video on social media, where it was widely shared.

The mototaxi driver was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery for a fractured right leg.

In a brief statement, Imoveqroo said the sanctions were formally notified and applied in accordance with mobility regulations. “Imoveqroo reaffirms its commitment to road safety, order, and legality,” the agency said.
