Solidaridad Takes Action to Combat Teen Pregnancies

In Playa del Carmen, a new agreement has been signed to strengthen public policies aimed at managing population growth and preventing teen pregnancies. The municipal president of Solidaridad, Estefanía Mercado, and the Secretary of Government of Quintana Roo, Cristina Torres Gómez, have signed the Coordination Agreement for the Decentralization of Population Policy. This agreement will enhance sociodemographic diagnoses and population projections until 2027, at both state and municipal levels. As part of this initiative, the Municipal Population Council and the Municipal Group for the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy (Gmupea) have been established.

Estefanía Mercado, the Mayor, emphasized that this agreement will support the development of fair policies that align with the municipality's tourist-oriented nature, while also bolstering the prevention of adolescent pregnancy with the help of DIF Solidaridad. "Our aim is for these strategies to reflect the realities of our municipality, ensuring our youth have access to the information and support they need for a brighter future," she said. Cristina Torres highlighted the critical need to address this issue, pointing out that Solidaridad has seen instances of pregnancy in girls as young as 15, not including those who seek care in other states. "Without these policies, we risk condemning our young people to an uncertain future, stunting their growth and forcing them to take on responsibilities they are too young for," she stated.

This initiative is part of the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, led by Governor Mara Lezama. The agreement focuses on transformation and social justice, and includes awareness campaigns about social issues, particularly the prevention of adolescent pregnancy.
