Smoke Prompts Second Evacuation of Chedraui Store in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A Chedraui supermarket was evacuated twice Saturday morning after smoke from the bakery area prompted emergency responses, authorities said.

Firefighters and civil protection personnel responded to the store at the intersection of Pavo Real and Loros avenues shortly after 8 a.m., following reports of smoke accumulation inside. The store had already been inspected earlier in the morning after a similar incident, when smoke was traced to bread burning in an oven.

In the second incident, staff detected heavy smoke and called emergency services. As a precaution, customers and employees were evacuated while firefighters conducted an inspection. No injuries or structural damage were reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest a possible mechanical failure in one of the bakery ovens, which may have been causing overheating and repeated smoke generation. Officials said the oven would be inspected further before the store reopens.

The second call came around 8 a.m., hours after the first report. Firefighters had initially cleared the scene after determining the smoke was from burned bread. The store remained closed during the second inspection.
