Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state prosecutor’s office is seeking a budget of 2.5 billion pesos ($130 million) for 2027 to reinforce its operational capacity, improve infrastructure, and tackle a caseload of more than 1,000 investigation files per week.
Raciel López Salazar, head of the State Prosecutor’s Office, said the request comes after a 38% budget cut in 2026, when lawmakers approved only 1.8 billion pesos of the 2.5 billion originally sought. This year, the office hopes to secure the necessary federal and state funds to complete ongoing projects.
“The proposal aims to address the operational and intelligence needs accumulated in the state and to continue the institution’s recovery after years of neglect,” López Salazar said.
Priority projects for next year include a new evidence warehouse, a forensic cemetery, specialized forensic facilities, and the expansion of offices in the northern part of the state, particularly in Cancún, he noted.
The budget also covers hiring more specialized personnel, purchasing weapons, uniforms, tactical gear, and vehicles, as well as funding for travel and fuel needed for field investigations.
The formal proposal is expected to be submitted to the state congress in September, following the annual report by Governor Mara Lezama.
