San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico — Schools in the highlands of Chiapas have reinstated mask mandates and social distancing measures in response to a statewide measles outbreak that has surged nationally.

Some secondary schools have advised parents to instruct their children on health self-care, including avoiding handshakes and kisses, maintaining social distance, and keeping them home if they show symptoms like fever, headache, or skin rashes, given confirmed measles cases in the area.

Chiapas is among the states with the highest number of infections nationwide, reporting 232 confirmed cases of the viral disease.
