Tulum, Quintana Roo — Rehabilitation work on the road connecting Tulum to Punta Allen will resume in the coming days with a new phase covering an additional 20 kilometers, according to Christian Moguel, director of Municipal Infrastructure.
The project aims to improve driving conditions on one of the main access routes to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a road used daily by residents, tourism service providers, and visitors heading to Punta Allen.
In the first phase, authorities rehabilitated 10 kilometers between kilometers 7 and 17 of the road. Now, work will continue from kilometer 17 to kilometer 37, focusing on improving the road surface to ease mobility and reduce current travel difficulties.
“This week, machinery and materials for the rehabilitation work begin arriving,” Moguel said. He added that work will formally start once heavy equipment and materials are fully transported to the intervention zone.
The rehabilitation will be carried out directly by the State Public Works Department (SEOP), following requests from residents and frequent users of the route and coordination with the state government.
Authorities did not disclose the total investment amount but said the state government will provide the funds.
Moguel noted that the road crosses a protected natural area managed by the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp), where visitors currently pay an access fee. However, this time the maintenance will receive extraordinary state support to address the road’s deteriorated condition, particularly after damage from rains and heavy vehicle traffic.
The work is expected to take three to four months to complete the full rehabilitation of the planned 20 kilometers.
