Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state Education Secretariat is reviewing curricula at private schools to ensure they comply with federal rules that prohibit militarized educational models.
The review follows an announcement by the federal Education Secretariat (SEP), acting on instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, that such programs will not be allowed to operate within Mexico’s national education system. The SEP said the New Mexican School model is based on a human rights approach and does not permit practices that undermine students’ well-being.
The state agency said inspections are already underway and are intended to ensure that private schools meet federal requirements by the start of the 2026-2027 school year on August 31.
As part of the process, the SEQ is analyzing study plans, academic content, learning objectives, and evaluation methods at private institutions to verify they align with current regulations.
Officials said no further details about the reviews will be released until the supervision process is complete.
The agency also clarified that there is a difference between a militarized school and one that promotes discipline, such as proper uniform use, punctuality, personal presentation, and respect for school rules — practices that are part of the internal organization of many educational institutions.
