Quintana Roo Planetariums to Expand Robotics, AI Programs

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state’s network of planetariums will expand its educational offerings with new programs in robotics, programming and artificial intelligence, an effort to get children and teenagers interested in science and technology.

The modernization of the planetariums in Chetumal, Playa del Carmen and Cancun will include new technology equipment to support early learning in scientific fields, according to Cristopher Malpica Morales, director general of the Quintana Roo Council for Humanities, Science and Technology (COQHCYT).

Malpica Morales said the venues will offer workshops in programming, robotics and app development, as well as activities related to configuring AI-based systems for technology projects.

“We are fostering a love of science and technology through different scientific disciplines,” he said. “We have promoted the STEAM model to break down paradigms and move into these activities.”

The STEAM model integrates science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Malpica Morales said each planetarium will have technology tools suited to its needs, but all will share the same educational approach aimed at strengthening innovation and problem-solving skills.

He also noted that the Planetario Ka’Yok’ in Cancun is undergoing a full rehabilitation. The 54 million peso project will renovate the facility, update its exhibits and add new equipment to create more interactive experiences for visitors.

The government hopes the expanded programs will strengthen science communication and help develop science and technology vocations among younger generations.
