Tulum’s ‘Renace’ Push Launches Shore Fishing Tournament With 30,000-Peso Purse

Tulum, Quintana Roo — Business owners and private-sector representatives in Tulum are rolling out a new strategy to revive the resort town’s tourism industry, built around sporting events designed to draw visitors and get commerce moving again.

The effort, branded “Tulum Renace” (Tulum Reborn), kicks off with a shore fishing tournament on Dec. 20 called “Pesca y Libera, El Gran Desafío del Caribe” (Catch and Release, the Great Caribbean Challenge), which will hand out a total purse of 30,000 pesos to the top three finishers.

Augusto Bates, one of the organizers, said the tournament is part of a broader push to encourage civic participation, showcase the municipality’s natural attractions and help reactivate tourism through activities that bring together residents and visitors. The goal, he said, is to tap the Mexican Caribbean’s potential for events that project a positive image of the destination and create new opportunities for tourism service providers.

The competition will be held at Playa del Pueblo in Tulum’s hotel zone, where anglers will test their skills in catch-and-release shore fishing. Action runs from 6 a.m. to noon, with prizes of 15,000 pesos for first place, 10,000 for second and 5,000 for third. Entry costs 500 pesos, and the first 150 anglers to register will receive a commemorative T-shirt.

Conservation Message Behind the Competition

Beyond promoting family outings and sport, organizers hope events like this will help diversify Tulum’s tourism offerings, particularly during the December holiday season. The project also aims to spread a culture of respect for marine ecosystems by releasing all catches, pairing recreational use of natural resources with environmental conservation.

The tournament will count on participation from the Circuito Peninsular de Pesca Deportiva, a regional sportfishing circuit, and the Tulum municipal government, which are joining the private sector’s effort to position “Tulum Renace” as a platform for tourism promotion and community involvement.

Those interested can get information and register by contacting Augusto Bates at 984 202 6755 or Raúl Nucamendi at 984 216 0053. Under the slogan “Fish, conserve and enjoy,” organizers hope the day of competition will help strengthen tourism and community life in one of the Mexican Caribbean’s leading destinations.
