Cancún, Quintana Roo — A motorcyclist who tried to pop a wheelie during Cancún’s “Rodada del Terror” lost control and slammed into the pavement, and early reports suggest the force of the impact could cost him a foot.

Video recorded by another participant shows the rider, wearing light-colored trousers and a black T-shirt, lifting the front wheel of his motorcycle before losing control and hitting the ground among other riders taking part in the caravan.

What happened

The crash occurred shortly before midnight on Saturday, Oct. 31, as the caravan of motorcyclists traveled along Avenida José López Portillo. According to reports, the young man raised his front wheel as the group reached Supermanzana 60, just before the intersection with Avenida Kabah, to show off the maneuver to onlookers.

The stunt went wrong. Witnesses said the injured rider cried out in pain, signaling how badly he had been hurt, and reports that circulated afterward suggested the impact could cost him one of his feet.

Residents complain about the ride

The event drew complaints from drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians in Cancún, who said the rides cause serious problems for mobility and safety. Critics said no authority has moved to stop them, and that the young participants do as they please without anyone stepping in.
