Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The Quintana Roo Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (COQHCYT) has launched a permanent public chess program called “The Chess House” at the state’s planetariums, aiming to strengthen strategic thinking, concentration, and social interaction.
The initiative, which began on March 17 and will run throughout the year, seeks to introduce children, youth, and adults to chess as an educational and intellectual development tool through community activities.
The program operates at four planetariums managed by COQHCYT: the Yook ol Kaab Planetarium in Chetumal, the Sayab Planetarium in Playa del Carmen, the KaYok Planetarium in Cancún, and the Chaan Kaan Planetarium in Cozumel. Activities take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with schedules varying by location.
The Quintana Roo Sports Commission (CODEQ) supported the initiative by donating 70 chess boards to facilitate the activities, part of a broader agreement between the institutions to promote intellectual, sporting, and social development in the state.
COQHCYT Director General Cristopher Malpica Morales emphasized the program’s role in fostering cognitive and strategic skills, promoting healthy interaction among participants, and creating accessible learning spaces for the entire community.
Interested individuals can obtain more information directly at the participating planetariums or through COQHCYT’s official social media channels.
