Cancun, Quintana Roo — With one month until the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, the Mexican Caribbean is positioning itself as a strategic hub for the thousands of national and international visitors expected to arrive in Mexico for the global sporting event.

Governor Mara Lezama said the state has spent over a year planning to ensure top-tier security, mobility, hospitality, infrastructure, and tourism services during the tournament.

One of the most significant announcements is that Quintana Roo will serve as the official base camp for the Uruguay national team, a historic powerhouse in world football. Stars such as Federico Valverde and Ronald Araújo will train in the state before and during the competition, putting Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean back in the global spotlight.

Lezama highlighted that Cancun International Airport will play a key role as an entry hub for fans traveling from around the world to matches in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

As part of its international strategy, Lezama met with diplomatic representatives from 21 countries accredited in Quintana Roo. She presented coordination efforts in tourism, security, health, and mobility to ensure a safe and orderly experience during the World Cup.

The meeting also reinforced collaboration on special protocols to protect children and adolescents during mass events, in partnership with the DIF Quintana Roo, UNICEF Mexico, and various state and federal agencies.

Diplomats from the United States and Canada praised Quintana Roo’s organization and operational capacity to handle the logistical and tourism challenges of the World Cup, highlighting institutional coordination and the state’s advance preparation.

With its beaches, international air connectivity, hotel infrastructure, and established tourism industry, Quintana Roo aims to solidify its role not only as a vacation destination but as a major player in the 2026 World Cup.
