Cancun Hotel Association to Host Third Sustainability Forum in November

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Hotel Association of Cancún, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres will host its third Sustainability Forum in November, bringing international speakers to the destination to discuss the blue economy model, sustainable cities and other topics.

Sponsored by major hotel and business groups in the region, including Original, Grupo Xcaret and Palace, the forum aims to advance sustainability in the area through a series of activities focused on best environmental practices, as well as programs and actions to support a healthier ecosystem.

The hotel sector has been pushing environmental initiatives, including the Restoration and Comprehensive Management Program for the coastal zone of Benito Juárez municipality. A study by the firm GPP will take eight months and cover the municipality’s 32 kilometers of coastline, seeking to restore dunes, wetlands, mangroves, beaches and other ecosystems.

The sector also highlighted its work to develop a comprehensive sargassum action plan under a public policy designed to address the seaweed influx that hit the region hard this year.

Before the forum, hotels are preparing for the 50th anniversary of the Travel Mart, scheduled for October. The event puts the Mexican Caribbean at the center of the country’s most important tourism trade negotiations. While Mexico has its own Tianguis Turístico, the region’s most significant business deals are made at the Travel Mart, which helps secure occupancy and tourism operations for the upcoming seasons.

Each year, the Travel Mart hosts more than 3,500 business meetings. Buyers and wholesalers from major source markets visit hotels, restaurants, theme parks and other attractions to negotiate contracts. The hotel sector said details of this year’s special anniversary edition will be announced in the coming days.
